The path to business success

From ordinary to extraordinary

Do you have a burning desire to achieve more from life as an independent entrepreneur? Then it requires you to think and behave differently.

Ordinary people don’t succeed because their thoughts and actions are just that, ordinary.

So how do you learn what the right thoughts and actions are that lead to success?

Simplify business

Business basically involves just three areas:

Offer, traffic, conversion

You need a good offer (product or service) to promote, people (traffic) to see it, and a way to convert it turning people into customers.

All three need to work together for maximum results. There are all sorts of possible variations within each area but when you step back and take a 10,000-foot strategic view, business is this simple.

Be around like-minded people

Group of people

The journey of an online entrepreneur can be lonely as most family and friends simply won’t understand what you are doing. They will naturally be sceptical and attempt to ‘protect’ you from disappointment.

Hang out with people that are on your wavelength. Better yet, get involved in some form of mastermind group. Discussing ideas and experiences with like-minded people can go a long in helping to stay motivated and focused.

Get a good mentor

Find someone who has been where you want to be, learn from their experience. They can help you dodge any pitfalls and understand the most effective actions to take.

Without one, you might still get where you want to go but it will just take longer as you figure things out on your own.

Success leaves clues so why not just model what works?

Define clear goals and review

Goal setting

If you aim at nothing, you are sure to hit it. The clearer you are with what you want to achieve, the better you can plan things to make it happen.

Review your goals daily. From a psychological point of view, you are keeping what’s important top of mind.

Studies have shown those who constantly review their goals are more likely to achieve them.

Take massive action

Grant Cardone has a bestselling book called ‘The 10x Rule’. In it, he explains that most people always fall short of the targets they set for themselves.

If you multiply your target by ten, fully commit and take massive action on that 10x target. You may fall short of that 10x target but you will absolutely crush your original target.

Get comfortable being uncomfortable

Comfort zone

There will always be something you need to push through to get to the next level. Fear or the little voice in your head will attempt to hold you back.

Learn to acknowledge it but stay focused on what matters most, your goals. Learn to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

Test and learn

Test and learn

The best thing you can do is develop a ‘test and learn’ habit with business. Never assume anything, always look to improve your activities.

Discover what doesn’t work and get rid of it fast. Keep what does work and continuously attempt to beat it.

Develop systems

When you finally know what works, develop a system for it. It enables you to scale up your activity and get consistent results. If you can automate it, that’s even better.

McDonalds, Starbucks and Amazon are successful because they use systems to run their businesses. They don’t leave anything open to interpretation. People simply just follow a proven system because:

The simple reality is that systems work and people fail.

7 ideas to start an online business

If you are thinking of starting an online business, this post will help.

It may seem counter-intuitive but the last place to start is to think about a website.  There are many different types of online businesses that have various pros and cons, here are seven of them:

  1. Being an affiliate
  2. Online store (e-commerce)
  3. Running a blog
  4. Selling information products
  5. Providing a service / freelancing
  6. Selling products on auction sites
  7. Deal in domains

1. Be an affiliate

Affiliate marketing

Being an affiliate means you specialise in referring to people other businesses. When someone you refer buys from that business, you earn a commission as a thank you.

It’s kind of like being an online salesperson except you don’t own the product and you don’t have to deal with any customer support.

2. Online store (e-commerce)

Online store

You can start an online store and sell products. There are several e-commerce platforms available that simplify this without needing technical skills.

You don’t need to be Amazon to succeed with online stores and if you use drop shipping to fulfil orders, you don’t even need to stock the products.

3. Blogging

If you are knowledgeable about a particular topic and like writing, you can start a blog. A common way to earn income with blogging is through running ads on it. Every time a person clicks on an ad, you earn revenue.

4. Sell information products

Did you know that you can sell information? Common formats include PDF (ebook), video or audio files. If you have knowledge that could be helpful to others, you can package it up and sell it.

Many people do well self-publishing all types of helpful information online, you could possibly too.

5. Provide a service / freelance

There are many skills which people don’t have but are happy to pay someone else to. Some ideas include writing, web design and graphic design but there’s heaps more.

Check out sites like upwork.com or freelancer.com, there are places where buyers and sellers meet to hire various services.

6. Sell products on auction sites

Online auction

Selling products on auction sites like Ebay or Trade Me (NZ) is another popular online business model. These sites are swarming with buyers if you can source or ‘dropship’ products that people want.

Drop shipping is when you partner up with a wholesaler who can fulfil an order which means you don’t have to hold stock and ship it.

7. Deal in domains

Domains are like virtual property, the right domain can be worth a good amount to someone wanting it. Some people like to invest in buying domains and then flip them for a tidy profit with the right buyer.

Those are just seven ideas on how you can start an online business. Once you decide on an idea, then you can work out what type of website you need to support it and go from there.
